Part of the Cathedral - Burgos - SPAIN - BURGOS) Roberts, David (British - 1837.
Hodgson & Graves. London. [ 1837]. - Tinted lithograph with handcolor, mounted on thick card as issued, image 16 x 11 inches on sheet size 22 x 17 3/4 inches. Overall light soiling to support card, a few faint foxing spots in image, image overall bright and clean. A view which seems to be straight out of the imagination of the Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, this is plate 25 from the deluxe first edition of David Roberts' first published set of views "Picturesque Sketches in Spain Taken During ye Years 1832 & 1833." Delicately handcolored colored at the time of publication, this edition, which was issued in a portfolio, cost more than double the standard edition. The plates were lithographed by many of the most talented lithographers of the day, this by T. Boys. Abbey (#152) notes that Roberts in fact worked on every stone, and that the views had an enormous sale, going through many printings. In this view, signed in the stone by Roberts, the ethereal Gothic Cathedral rises behind a colorful example of the local architecture on a street bustling with activity. An exceptional composition.
