Memoires - LOVELACE, Ada.) MONTPENSIER, Anne Marie - 1730.
Amsterdam: Jean-Frederic Bernard,, 1730. Six volumes, duodecimo (175 x 95 mm). Early 19th century half calf, spines gilt in compartments with orange morocco labels, marbled sides, speckled edges. Some light rubbing round the extremities, sound and on the whole internally clean but for some minor worming, very good condition. Very scarce early edition, Ada Lovelace's copy, of the memoirs of the Duchess of Montpensier (1627?1693), the greatest heiress in 17th century France, who received the suit numerous European Kings but eventually fell in love with a (comparatively) lowly courtier and soldier. The memoirs were first printed in Paris in 1728 - any early edition is very scarce complete. Each copy bears the stamps of Ada Lovelace's now demolished Exmoor summer retreat, Ashley Combe House, and the later stamps of Ben Damph Forrest, the later sporting lodge of her husband William King, Earl of Lovelace (1805-1893).
