Hogarths "Arabia" + Cheque from Wilfred Merton - Doughty, Charles M - 1922.
Privately Published, London 1922 - First separate edition, 25 copies signed by the author, this copy numbered "Five" is from the library of journalist and Middle East expert Peter Hopkirk and bears his distinctive small bookplate, [1p., limitation], [2pp., blank] pp.9pp. One of only 25 copies, signed. by Charles M. Doughty's private edition of his review of D.G. Hogarth's Arabia (Clarendon Press, 1922), reprinted from The Observer 19 March 1922. This reprint was arranged by Sydney Cockerell and printed at the Chiswick Press. The reprint bears some minor corrections from the newspaper article, advised to Doughty by T.E. Lawrence, too late for inclusion in the newspaper, see his letter to Doughty, 18.3.22 and confirmed as corrected by Doughty in his letter to TE of 31st March '22. David George Hogarth (1862-1927), archaeologist, Arabian traveller, and keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, author of A Wandering Scholar in the Levant (1896) and The Penetration of Arabia (1904). Hogarth travelled to Carchemish in 1910 with T.E. Lawrence, whom he encouraged to learn Arabic. "With the outbreak of the First World War, Hogarth's knowledge of the Arab world and the Ottoman empire was invaluable" (ODNB). He worked with the Arab Bureau in Cairo. "Hogarth was largely responsible for the difficult and delicate diplomacy which underlay the Arab campaign so brilliantly conducted in the field by his former archaeological disciple, T. E. Lawrence."A fine essay on Hogarth's work, Arabia; its cadences reveal much of Doughty .This is by its limitation an extremly rare survival and we know how strict the limitation was as Doughty confirms the destruction of a twenty sixth copy in a letter to Cockerell. Grey printed wrappers that have conservation repair to spine. Included two newspaper cuttings about Doughty laid in, together with a cheque made out to Doughty by printer Wilfred Merton for 4 guineas dated 1923 and possibly paying for this booklet. Countersigned on the reverse by Doughty. Wilfred Merton for 4 guineas made out to Doughty dated 1923 and possibly paying for this booklet. Wilfred Merton was of course involved with Bruce Rogers and Emery Walker in the printing of "The Odyssey". Highly elusive items. Please request further details.
