Directions to servants. - Swift, Jonathan - 1925. [1278152]
[Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire]: Golden Cockerel Press 4to (26.3 cm; 10.375"). [4], 35, [2] pp.; illus.. 1925 Beautifully done Golden Cockerel Press version of Swift's unfinished hilarious and satirical advice to English servants. While the first few chapters are mostly complete, a note tells the reader that "redundancies that occur in the text must be taken merely as an indication of its unfinished state." F. Young, A.H. Gibbs, and W.R. Mills served as compositors here with A.C. Cooper acting as pressman and John Nash providing => 12 striking in-text wood engravings. The text, completed on 3 January 1925, is printed in => green and black with 11 pt. Caslon O.F. type set in double columns on unbleached Arnold paper. This edition was limited to 380 copies with 350 for sale, of which this is => copy number 5 of only 30 bound in full vellum and signed at the colophon below the (gilt) cockerel by Nash. Full vellum over boards with gilt spine, gilt-rolled board edges, and gilt-decorated turn-ins; boards gently bowed with some light spotting and bottom of blue ribbon bookmark faded and frayed. A few late leaves very lightly creased across and a typical bit of foxing, notably at untrimmed fore- and bottom edges butoccasionally elsewhere and with one "dot" on title-page; in fact => a clean, pleasing copy of a handsome and very readable book in its limited issue.
