INSCRIBED by the author to a prominent New York literary editor (name on request), "For the efforts you made on behalf of this book, which Peter Mayer continued." Mayer has had a very distinguished career in publishing, but before moving on to head Pocket Books and Penguin worldwide he worked at Avon in the 1960s, so we presume he had some responsibility in their producing the first mass market paperback of this novel so for the first time it could beeasily read by a wide audience, and thus became more generally known and acclaimed. Full gray cloth with black cloth author-title-publisher label on spine. lii, 599 pages. large octavo. Near Fine clean copy, no bookplates, no owner signature or marks, no soiling, but with slight rubbing, wear at spine ends; in a VG Minus dust jacket that is clean, and now held with rest of jacket within an acid-free mylar protective sleeve; jacket with edge chips, especially at and near spine top, where the deepest chip descends to a maximum of 0.5 inch. First published in the Depression this work was praised by New York authors and critics and remembered by them and their friends over the next quarter of a century, but this edition was the first chance most post-war readers across America had to read the book for themselves.
