Glasgow: Chalmers & Collins. 1821/1823/1826 Some heavy foxing to vol. III with sl. tear to upper margin of pp155-162, vol. III, occasional light spotting to other vols, leading pastedown laid down in vol. I. Sl. later half morocco grained green cloth, marbled boards, spines lettered in gilt; edges sl. rubbed. Inscription on leading f.e.p. vol. I: 'To my dear friend Rory in the sweet hope that once he might plead the cause of Christian oeconomy in the municipal council of this our large town. August 1880. [signed] K?' An attractive set.Preacher, mathematician, philanthropist and political economist, Chalmers sought to marry economics with religion. He divided his Parish of St John's into districts, established schools and presided over a pauper scheme which brought success through moral & religious improvement. In doing so he reduced the cost of the Pauper scheme from £1400 to just £280.
