Nut en Proffyteluck, Voor Alle Souvereins, Baillius Borgem. Ende Schepenen. Etc. Item hier is Noch by Ghevoecht D'Ordinantie op T'Stuck van de Criminele Justitie in Dese Nederlanden. Rotterdam: By Pieter van Waesberge, 1642. Two parts in one volume, each with title page. First part preceded by etched pictorial title page with eight vignettes. (One is an allegory of justice, the others illustrate brutal forms of execution and other draconian punishments.) [xvi], 366; [ii], 102 pp. 56 woodcut text illustrations. Octavo (7-1/2" x 4-1/2"). Contemporary vellum with lapped edges, early hand-lettered title to spine. Light soiling, corners and spine ends bumped, pastdowns loose, text block partially detached but secure. Some edgewear to front and rear endleaves, a bit of rubbing to fore-edge of title page. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves, internally clean. An appealing copy of a rare imprint. * First published in 1551, this was the first comprehensive study of criminal procedure published in northern Europe. A synthetic work drawn mostly from Roman-Dutch sources, it was based on Philip Wielant's Practycke Crimineele (1439-1519) and other earlier treatises. Published in Latin, Dutch and French, it was standard authority throughout the continent for many years. This Dutch edition from 1570 is illustrated throughout with woodcuts depicting adultery, murder, theft and many other crimes. Damhouder was an advisor to the Duke of Burgundy and a prolific author of legal and religious treatises. The 1642 Rotterdam imprint was also issued in Utrecht by Johan van Waesberge. Excepting their title pages, the two Waesberge imprints are identical. The 1642 Rotterdam edition, which is not listed in Dekkers, is quite rare. OCLC locates 7 copies, 2 in North America (University of Delaware, Yale).
