The Diary of Samuel Pepys. Transcribed from - PEPYS, Samuel - 1893. [1277311]
London: George Bell & Sons, 1893 - 10 volumes, octavo (215 x 134 mm). Contemporary dark blue half morocco by Riviere & Son, spines gilt panelled and ruled on the raised bands, blue linen sides, top edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Attractive engraved bookplate of William Edward Hollis. Spines lightly sunned, one of two light scrapes to bindings. A very good set. Engraved frontispiece to each volume and further illustrations throughout; title pages printed in red & black. First Wheatley edition, "the fullest edition of the diary before the Latham one [1970-83]" (ODNB); this set extra-illustrated with the addition of 483 engravings, as described on the extra letterpress title in each volume (dated 1919: "printed for the illustrator", i.e. the collector of the additional illustrations): "being Portraits of Persons, Views of Places, and other objects of interest mentioned in the text". These engravings - from copperplate through to wood-engraving (a few hand-coloured) - range in date from the early 18th through to the late 19th centuries , and have been carefully mounted on paper and occasionally decorated with a ruled border. An impressive set, handsomely bound.
