[viii]+324(last colophon), black & white frontispiece portrait plus 5 hand coloured plates, appendix; rebound in modern black half leather, the spine lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled papered boards; later endpapers, bookplate on upper pastedown, early paper repair to long closed tear from fore-edge into text pp. 161/2, a little light foxing and occasional faint soiling; John Murray, London, 1818. Second edition. *First published in 1817. The frontispiece portrait is of Murray Maxwell, the captain of the \i Alceste , who escorted the new Ambassador (Lord Amherst) to China in 1816. The \i Alceste was wrecked in the Gaspar Strait, and Maxwell and his crew were marooned on a nearby island, where they were attacked by Malay pirates. They were eventually rescued by an East India Company ship. The author, John McLeod was the Surgeon of the \i Alceste . [Attributes: Hard Cover]
