A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being A Ghost - DICKENS, Charles - 1843.
London, Chapman & Hall, 1843 - Octavo. Original cinnamon brown vertical-ribbed cloth, covers stamped in blind with single line border and decorative holly and ivy design, front cover with large gilt wreath in centre, spine with decorative title banner in gilt, yellow endpapers, gilt edges. Ownership inscription dated February 1844 on front free endpaper. Skilfully rebacked with original spine laid down, minor restoration to joints, a good copy. Hand-coloured etched frontispiece and 3 plates, illustrations, after Leech. Dickens's lavish gift book was one of his biggest publishing triumphs and the foundation of many of the elements of the modern Christmas festival. This copy is one of a large number of mixed editions, with the first edition title, but second edition (corrected) text. It has yellow endpapers, blue and red title page dated 1843, half-title and title verso printed in blue, and Stave One on the first page, and in that respect has the appearance of a first edition, second issue. The gilt wreath on the front cover is in the later state, with the wreath shifted closer to the left and the upper serif of the D of Dickens missing, identifying it as Todd's second impression. Smith II, 4; Eckel pp. 11015.
