De vita S. Francisci Xaverii, qui primus - Torsellino, Orazio - 1571.
Rothomagi: Apud Joannem de Manneville 12mo (15.5 cm; 6.125"). ff., 480 pp.. 1571 [sic for 1671] An important, early biography (here in a later edition) of the great Renaissance figure St. Francis Xavier. Torsellino (1545?99) entered the Society of Jesus at age 18, went on to serve in a variety of capacities in Rome, Florence, and Loretto, and is the author of a number of important books, including the present work and an edition of St. Francis Xavier's letters. His biography of St. Francis (1506?52), the great Jesuit missionary to the East Indies and Japan and => the order's first great martyr, appeared for the first time in 1594. Produced in his absence, it was full of errors: He quickly issued a corrected edition and several subsequent printings occurred, including translations from the Latin into German, English, Spanish, Flemish, French, and Hungarian. Searches of OCLC and the NUC reveal => no U.S. libraries holding this "centennial" edition. Contemporary plain mottled calf, round spine with raised bands and title lettered in gilt; rubbed at corners and top spine compartment pulled (or gnawed?) with loss of that leather. Old shelf-label on front pastedown; four paper flaws, one holing a leaf's margin without loss, another at a leaf's edge affecting a sidenote on each side, and two affecting corners; a few scattered spots.
