This scarce 1767 edition of his Works prominently features the first collected appearance in English of his 1762 Treatise on the Social Compact, which "remains Rousseau's greatest work". a crucial document of egalitarian government" (PMM 207). Also included is his preeminent 1754 Second Discourse on "The Origin and Foundation of the Inequality of Mankind," a work that "made him immortal" (Gourevitch, xv), and his 1755 Dissertation on Political Economy, which "tackles one major subject barely mentioned in the Social Compact, that of taxation, and has much to say on patriotism" (Christopher Betts).
