Plate XXXVIII. [Claremont, Homerton's white - BROOKSHAW - POMONA BRITANNICA - PE - 1809. [1276355]
1809 1809 - Color aquatint, plate mark 17 5/8 x 13 3/4 inches on sheet 21 1/4 x 17 inches. A few faint foxed spots in outer margins, thin line of dampstaining along lower edge well outside image, tiny area at centre where the aquatint background has been imperfectly printed, sheet has been trimmed at upper edge (still 3/4 inch margin outside the plate mark. Overall very good condition. This exquisite print is from the first, folio, edition of George Brookshaw's lavish production "Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits at present cultivated in the country; together with the Blossoms and Leaves of such as are necessary to distinguish the various sorts from each other." This magnificent work of 90 plates was published in 1812, although the plates are dated between 1804 and 1812, having been issued in parts over that period. The plates were printed in color by the aquatint process, with some stipple, and then highlighted with handcolor. This plate, number 38, is a gorgeous, richly colored image of four peaches with blossom sprigs, set off against a rich brown background. [Attributes: First Edition]
