Appointing John Burnett ensign 'in the Regiment of Foot to be forthwith raised for Our Service Commanded by Our Trusty & Welbeloved Colonell Roger Townshend; of that Company whereof he himself is Captain.'Roger Townshend, who died in 1709, was MP for Nortfolk and later for Great Yarmouth; he was the brother of Charles, second Viscount Townshend (1674-1738), politician, diplomatist and agricultural innovator, who earned the nickname 'Turnip Towshend' for his championship of the humble vegetable, which he cultivated in a new fashion and used in a successful scheme of crop rotation.
