Apologia Pro Vita Sua: Being A Reply to a - John Newman - 1864. [1276338]
London - Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts, And Green, 1864 Book. Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A first edition of Newman's famous defence of his life and faith; a presentation copy signed by the author. Newman wrote the work following the sharp criticisms he received in printfrom the Church of England priest, Charles Kingsley. Following a brief correspondance with Kingsley (which Newman found unsatisfactory), he decided to write a general defence of his own integrity and of Catholicism. The work quickly became a best seller, and is still in print. It established Newman as one of the most prominent advocates of Catholicism in Great Britain. It also won him the battle of public opinion. This copy was inscribed by Newman himself, as a presentation to one Emily Bowles, who met Newman in 1840 and converted to Catholicism three years later. Condition: In the original cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Externally, with some wear and fading to the spine. The extremities are a little bumped. With marking to the boards. With a bookseller's plate to the front pastedown. With a plate inscribed by the author to the front free endpaper, which has offset slightly to the title. Internally, lightly cockled, but otherwise generally clean. Generally firmly bound. Overall: GOOD.
