The Good Earth Original Lithograph by John - Curry, John Steuart - 1942. [1275978]
Associated American Artists, New York 1942 - This is an original pencil signed lithograph on paper w/ a 12-3/4" x 10-1/8 " image in a 19" x 15" frame, Signed in pencil LR. It has not been removed from its frame to check condition or sheet size but appears to be in good condition w/ no apparent flaws (sheet size should be 16-3/4" x 12-5/8"). John Steuart Curry (1897-1946) was one of the three members of the great Regionalist Triumvirate of the early 20th Century (along with Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton). He was also an artist member of Prairie Print Makers. "Our Good Earth" exists in several forms. A finished oil painting used as the basis for an equally famous photo-mechanical color lithographic war poster, produced by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) in both large and small versions w/ copies posted nationwide in 1942. The image was used again as a cover illustration for a GPO informational booklet directed to farmers. And finally, it was produced as a fine art lithograph on stone published in 1942 in an edition of 250 by Associated American Artists, New York. Many critics believe the lithograph is the most evocative of the three forms. The aim of the project was to inspire leading American artists to create pictures that would encourage popular support for the nation¿s war effort. Curry¿s response was simple yet powerful, an image that transcends its original motivation as illustration and propaganda. In particular, a representation of the contemporary yeoman farmer descended from those who founded and developed this country; his placement in a field of waving wheat surrounded by his children presents the Midwest as an energetic, fertile land, inhabited by heroic people of unlimited potential Curry was not adverse to co-opting and transposing European examples and some believe Michelangelo¿s David was the likely source for Curry¿s heroic farmer who, instead of holding a sling, is seen clutching three stems of wheat.
