The Eye Of Love - GROEBLI, Rene - 1954.
London: Photography, 1954. - First Edition. Oblong octavo. Bound in soft paper boards with photographic self-wraps and scarce original tracing paper jacket, printed in purple. Black and white photographs throughout, with a foreword by Basil Burton. Internally clean. Binding and jacket with trivial wear only. A remarkable survival. This photo essay follows a woman as she returns home, undresses, smokes a cigarette, gets ready to go out, and then heads to an empty hotel bar, where she apparently waits for an acquaintance. The woman is in fact Groebli's wife, Rita, and the collection has rightly been described as both wistful and romantic. Swiss-born, Groebli is known better in Germany, though this collection demonstrates his claim to be a world-class photo essayist. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
