Bookshop of the Mechitarists' Congregation San Lazzaro Venice 1817 - Small 8vo, title, [ix], 399 pp., with one folding table, four engraved vignettes, eight mostly folding engraved plates (one hand-coloured) and two folding engraved world maps; the larger (29 x 42 cm) with repaired tears, a few restored short tears to a three other engravings; clean and fresh in contemporary mottled calf, spine ornamented in gilt and with gilt-stamped lettering-pieced, covers with borders tooled in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Second edition, (first 1806-1808, Struck is checking this) Of this very rare geographical textbook in armenian. It was written by Step'annos Giwver Agonc' (1739/40 - 1824) an Armenian Mechitarist science teacher and monk from Transsylvania, and beautifully printed in the Armenian Mechitarist [or: Mekhitarist] congregation situated in the Venetian lagoon. The plates illustrate astronomical and meteorological subjects, including one hand-coloured depiction of a volcano erupting. One of the two world maps shows California still as an island.
