Four issues of this important émigré journal that published officially undesirable writers such as Anna Akhmotova, Izaak Babel, Joseph Brodskiy, Mikhail Kuzman, Osip Mandelshtam, Vladimir Nabokov, Boris Pasternak and Marina Tsvetaeva. The first volume was dedicated to Pasternak, who had recently died following his denunciation after the publication of Doctor Zhivago in the West in 1958. The title of this almanac refers to Pasternak's 1925 collection of short stories. The almanac contains the largest first publication of Mandelshtam's poetry, comprising 57 poems written in 1930-37, as well as the full version of 'Zhil Aleksandr Gertsovich', and the first complete version of Akhmatova's epic 'Poema bez geroya' [Poem Without a Hero].
