FIRST EDITION 1793, 4to, approximately 275 x 215 mm, 10Â¾ x 8Â½ inches, folding map of The Marches of Alexander the Great, pages: , 423, , with final page of errata, bound in early half calf over marbled sides, gilt raised bands, gilt rules and ornament in compartments, gilt lettered black morocco label, edges speckled red. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed, tiny chips to label, some grazing to marbled paper, corners worn, 2 missing leather at tip, inner paper hinges cracked, that at the front neatly mended with binder's linen tape, prelims and first page of text lightly foxed in the margins, map very lightly offset onto itself, small slit to edge of 1 fold, no loss of image, small piece torn from 1 lower page corner, no loss of text, very pale browning to signature Yy, very pale foxing to last three leaves. A very good copy of a rare book. A translation of 'Examen critique des anciens historiens d'Alexandre-le-Grand'. Baron de Sainte-Croix (1746-1809) was a French historian and antiquary. His early career was in the army but from 1770 he devoted himself to historical studies and in 1777 he was admitted to the Academie des inscriptions et belles-lettres.
