A CONFEDERATE GENERAL FROM BIG SUR - INSCRIBED - Brautigan, Richard - 1973. [1275136]
London: Picador / Pan Books Ltd., 1973. First UK Paperback Edition. Octavo (19.75cm); illustrated wrappers; xii, 116pp. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "This copy is for Tom McGuane / Richard Brautigan / July 16, 1973." Text edges slightly tanned, mild wear and creasing to wrapper extremities, with vertical reading crease to left edge of front wrapper; Very Good. Housed in a custom quarter leather and marbled paper clamshell case. A well-read copy of Brautigan's first novel, bearing a typically subdued inscription to one of his closest friends. Tom McGuane was an on-again, off-again roommate of Brautigan's during the early years he lived in Bolinas, California. Over a nearly 20 year period, the two men would travel together and live near each other between California, Montana, and Key West. They ran in many of the same creative and artistic circles, both men admiring each other's work. McGuane would write a lengthy and generous review of an omnibus edition of Brautigan's work (Delacorte, 1970) in the February 15, 1970 issue of The New York Times Book Review. In William Hjortsberg's exhaustive 2012 biography of Brautigan, he goes on at length to describe how deeply Brautigan admired McGuane - idolized him, even - as an author, as a man, and as a husband. Books inscribed by Brautigan to close, personal friends, are uncommon. Not in Barber.
