THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY - Sachse, Julius, editor, et al - 1900. [1275017]
Philadelphia: Thos. H. McCollin & Co, 1900. First editions. 8vos., variable paginations, with original photographs mounted throughout. 14 volumes. This unbroken run begins with Vol. 7, and concludes with Vol. 20. Acquired from the British Patent Office and bears their stamp throughout, often in the margin or surface of an original photograph. Some later volumes show dampstaining. Newly rebound in brown cloth over boards with paper spine labels. Although the title of this journal is almost identical to an earlier publication, it is entirely different. Begun in 1879, largely as a trade circular of Anthony and Scovil, it gained substance in 1886 with articles, reviews and reports predominantly written by members of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia, a preeminent group of American Naturalistic or Pictorialist photographers, among them, William H. Rau, John G. Bullock, Robert S. Redfield, et al. An illustrated monthly devoted to photography in the widest sense. Publication was suspended in 1898, as well as between April and December 1899. It merged with "Photo Era Magazine" in 1900, which was absorbed by "American Photography" in April 1932. This serial was a trade circular of Anthony & Scovill before 1886.
