A CHRONICLE OF GOLDEN FRIARS AND OTHER STORIES - Le Fanu, J[oseph] Sheridan - 1896.
Downey & Co. Limited, London 1896 - Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii] viii 2-329 [330: blank] [331: ads] [332: printer's imprint], 25 illustrations, some full page, by Brinsley Le Fanu and John F. O'hea, original decorated blue-green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold, publisher's monogram on rear panel stamped in blind, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. The "Chronicle" collected here is the short novel "The Bird of Passage," a story of thirty chapters, first published in TEMPLE BAR, April-July 1870, and collected in volume three of the rare CHRONICLES OF GOLDEN FRIARS (1871). The rest of the book collects five stories, all first published in THE DUBLIN UNIVERSITY MAGAZINE, including "The Ghost and the Bone-Setter," Le Fanu's first published story. The five stories, four of which are supernatural, were collected earlier in THE PURCELL PAPERS (1880). "The Bird of Passage" is a sentimental tale of the love of a humble young squire for a beautiful young gypsy girl. "The Last Heir of Castle Connor," is a powerful story of the horror of a duel. Ellis 22. Cloth worn at spine ends and corners and rubbed along outer joints and fore and bottom edges, text block a bit shaken, a good copy. A scarce book.
