Aqueduct and Subway Engineer and His Projects - Photography: Industrial] Seymour - 1910.
1910-1916 1910 - Personal photograph album of Horatio Seymour, the great-great-great grandson of President John Adams and the great nephew of New York Governor Horatio Seymour (1810-1886). He was born in Michigan in 1883 and educated at Yale. The album is made up of 104 photographs he took of his engineering projects from 1910-1916. The first part of the album reflects his work as inspector for the Board of Water Supply for New York in the construction of the water supply for New York City known as the Catskill Aqueduct and the Hudson River Siphon. Work commenced in 1907 and completed in 1916. The Hudson River Siphon was a tunnel built below the Hudson River (at 1140 feet below sea level) at Breakneck Mountain to funnel Catskill water to the citizens of NYC. There are 26 photographs dating from 1910, 1911 & 1913 of East Shaft Compressor Plant, Hudson River Siphon, Aqueduct in Open Cut, West Portal - Breakneck Tunnel, Mixing Concrete for Shaft #10 Lining (with workers). Some photographs of fellow contractors and engineers are identified. Seymour was next employed as assistant engineer for the Public Service Commission, New York State in charge of subway construction from 1912-1915. The 27 photographs show the construction of Mosholu Parkway, Bedford Park Station, Jerome Avenue Elevated and the White Plains Avenue Elevated in Brooklyn. On one interesting page in the album, Seymour created a hierarchical chart of identified photographs of the engineers employed at the "Public Service Com. Engineers on Construction of Route #16, Sec. #2". The remaining photographs are of his family vacations of 1911, 1912, 1916 including fishing on several Canadian Lakes, and trips by ship to Kingston, Jamaica, and the Panama Canal. Album 11 x 7.25", black thick paper covers, 64 leaves with photographs (the rest blank), photographs are 5.5 x 3.3", glue mounted mostly two per page with handwritten captions. Cover is rubbed at edges/corners and spine head/foot shows wear with one small chip at upper spine corner. Very interesting. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
