Holograph signature: "Oliver Goldsmith / - GOLDSMITH, OLIVER - 1756.
- ? In late 1756 and 1757 Goldsmith was employed intermittently as an assistant schoolmaster at Peckham, in South London, where there was a school kept by a Dr. Milner, a dissenting minister. The present signature appears to be part of a leaf from a book acquired by Goldsmith during that brief interlude. Manuscript material of any sort in the hand of Oliver Goldsmith is very uncommon. Paper soiled and ragged along edges, but the signature is clear and bold.
