Privately Published,, New York: 1866 - An ex-library copy in very good+ condition in pebbled light brown leather covered boards with five raised bands on the spine with gilt text and tool work in the compartments and the gilt Colt family crest with the rampant colt on the front and rear boards. The leather turn-ins are decorated with gilt doublures and the end sheets are beautiful marbled papers. All edges of the text block are gilt. A small quarto measuring 10 3/16 by 7 3/16 inches. The joints are rubbed as are the tips of the boards, there is a gilt library call number in the lowest compartment on the spine, a library discard plate on the verso of the first free end page, a handwritten "shelve reference stack" at the upper corner of the second free end page, a blind embossed library stamp on the title page and a handwritten library call number at the upper edge of the copyright page. Together the library markings are not significant or all that damaging to the appearance of this marvelous title. 399 pages illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of Samuel Colt, an engraved title page showing the home of the Colts, several maps and numerous engraved plates and engraved vignettes within the text.
