Quarto, contemporary full red straight-grain morocco gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, all edges gilt. $4200.First edition of James Fittler's two-volume "Cabinet Bible," beautifully illustrated with 75 engraved plates after Durer, Rembrandt, Rubens, Vandyck, Correggio, Poussin, and other Old Masters, as well as engraved title pages. Very handsomely bound in full contemporary straight-grain morocco-gilt.This "Cabinet Bible" was the first to feature engraved plates by James Fittler, the distinguished 18th-century artist, an associate of the Royal Academy and marine engraver to George III; with letterpress by Thomas Bensley. Of the engraved plates, 45 are full-page illustrations, 30 are vignette section titles. With the famous misprint "Let the children first be killed" (instead of "filled") at Mark vii, 27. Darlow & Moule 961. Herbert 1394. Early owner signatures.Infrequent faint foxing to the margins of a few plates, text generally quite clean and fresh.
