An Address Delivered Before the Senior Class - EMERSON, RALPH WALDO - 1838. [1274272]
Boston: James Munroe, 1838 - 8vo, original printed blue wrappers, 31 pages. ? Emerson's boldest statement to date on the Transcendentalist cause and the need to question religious tradition: "Let me admonish you, first of all, to go alone; to refuse the good models, even those which are sacred in the imagination of men, and dare to love God without mediator or veil." Contemporary ink ownership signature of Abner J. Phipps on the upper wrapper - a graduate of Phillips Academy, Dartmouth College (1838) and resident of Boston - who was probably present at Emerson's address. Wrappers slightly soiled; and worn; but still a fine copy of an elusive, early Emerson title which when found at all is usually disbound. Enclosed in a chemise and cloth slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
