- In twenty-four volumes, complete. Approximately 10,000 pages, with over 300 plates, including a frontispiece to most volumes (several with a tissue guard, the frontispiece to \i Christmas Books folding), 12 of the plates in \i The Four Georges tinted, pictorial title page to several volumes, plus numerous text illustrations (some full page) and decorative initials; dark green cloth over bevelled boards, lettered and decorated in gilt & blind, sometimes slightly rubbed or a trifle soiled, some of the edges lightly worn; top edges uncut, several volumes partly unopened; a few of the hinges starting, ownership markings (inked inscription and/or stamps) on outer leaves each volume, some of the plates lightly offset, a few small edge chips or splits, long closed horizontal tear across most of the plate opposite p. 36 in Volume 17 (\i Christmas Books ), occasional minor creasing, scattered light foxing and soiling; Smith, Elder, London, 1869-1886. The Library Edition, cloth binding. *The first collected edition of Thackeray's works. The last two volumes, \i Contributions to 'Punch' and \i Miscellaneous Essays, Sketch\rquote s and Reviews were published separately in 1886, in the same format as the first 22 volumes, but with the series title and half-title pages bound in. The series title and half-title pages for the first 22 volumes are bound in at the end of \i Catherine .\i A few volumes in this set are probably early reprints: the first 22 volumes are all dated 1869 on the title page, but a couple include an advertisement at the end for the complete 24 volume set, so must be 1886 or later. The illustrations (steel engravings and woodcuts), are by Thackeray, Richard Doyle, Frederick Walker, and George Du Maurier. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
