THE SNAKE'S PASS: A NOVEL - Stoker, Bram - 1890. [1274222]
Harper & Brothers, New York 1890 - Octavo, pp. [1-4] [1] 2-234 [235-236: ads], original pictorial light blue-gray wrappers printed in dark blue. First U.S. edition. Issued as "Harper's Franklin Square Library New Series," number 685. The author's first novel, published by Harper in November 1890 (so dated on front cover), possibly preceding the British edition published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, Ltd. on 18 November 1890 [but with title page postdated 1891]. Adventure novel concerning the discovery of lost treasure and the crown of the legendary king of the snakes in Western Ireland. "A tale written around the strange phenomenon of a moving bog. Scene: the Mayo coast, which is finely described. Hidden treasure, prophetic dreams, attempted murder, and much love and sentiment are bound up with the story." - Brown, Ireland in Fiction 1551. Dalby 5b. Very small chips from spine ends (no loss to lettering or rules), light foxing around the edges of front cover, faint stain to bottom edge of front cover with very faint penetration into bottom edges of the first six leaves, a very good copy. An excellent copy of this fragile and elusive book. (#91039) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
