Claverings - TROLLOPE Anthony - 1867. [1274155]
1867 - TROLLOPE, Anthony. The Claverings. London: Smith, Elder, 1867. Two volumes. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter red calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, green morocco spine labels, marbled boards, endpapers, and edges. $1600.Preferred first British edition, with 16 wood-engraved illustrations, attractively bound."No one has exhibited the outward aspects of the England of his day". as Anthony Trollope has done". When the 20th century desires to estimate the nineteenth, they will be disinterred and studied with an attention accorded to no other contemporary work of the kind, except, perhaps, George Eliot's Middlemarch" (DNB XIX:1168). The Claverings was originally serialized in the Cornhill Magazine in sixteen installments from February 1866 to May 1867. The first (book) edition was published in America in 1866 according to the publication date, but many (including Sadlier) dispute the accuracy of the date: the first British edition is preferred. Sadlier 27. A few spots of soiling to interiors, light rubbing to bindings, very mild toning to spines. An extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
