Some are identified though and are the work of Stephen Sly, (British, fl. 1836-46), noted in Rodney Engen, Dictionary of Victorian Wood Engravers (Cambridge: Chadwyck-Healey, 1985), 239-40. Engen notes that Sly contributed to Charles Knight's Penny Magazine, Old England, and Old England Worthies.. He also illustrated some of the early issues of the Illustrated London News. Sly also engraved some of the illustrations in The Riches of Chaucer. See Charlotte C. Morse, "Popularizing Chaucer in the Nineteenth Century" in The Chaucer Review 38:2 (2003), 99-125. Also contains various calographic engravings near the rear of the book. Labelled "Proof Book" on spine. Was most likely used as a reference source for an etching company. Covers soiled, rubbed and scuffed at edges. Front inside hinge cracked. Previous owner's name on front free endpaper. Tissue protectors often bent or folded.
