Bound as issued in publisher's green cloth with title and vignette stamped in gold on the spines; illustrated with maps, lithographs (some colored, some tinted) and in-text wood engravings--all present as called for in addition to a few that arent called for; the large folding frontispiece of Volume One is bound in proceeding the introduction and another plate serves as the frontispiece; some offsetting by lithographs to adjacent pages; scant and scattered pencil marginalia; two leaves have been inserted from another contemporary copy making the text complete; former library copy with limited and unobtrusive markings on the front pastedowns and front flyleaves of both volumes; front boards have a tasteful blind stamp; both volumes have been discreetly rebacked with original backstrips laid down; textblocks were relined, corners strengthened and inner hinges tastefully mended in the process. The repair work is quite sensitive and sympathetic. Sabin 89999.
