Thick octavo, contemporary full blind-decorated brown morocco rebacked with original spine laid down, raised bands, all edges gilt. $2200.Mid-19th century edition of the "Bread of God," the Bible, in modern Western Armenian, handsomely bound.The "Holy Translators" Mesrop, Sahak the Patriarch, Eznik and others first translated the Bible into ancient Armenian in the late fourth and early fifth centuries (Darlow & Moule II:1, 86). "In the mid-19th century one of the decisive features of Armenian literature was the replacement of classical Armenian with the vernacular". The Armenian-language printing of the Bible took on a new importance when the Armenian Protestant Community was formed in 1850, and hired the linguist and scholar Elias Riggs to prepare new editions. In 1853 the Smyrna press printed the complete Bible in modern Armenian" (Neressian, The Bible in the Armenian Tradition 36, 38). This edition was one of several that followed; no corrected edition would be adopted as standard until 1873. Characteristically, the title page refers to the Bible as "Bread of God." The line that refers to the Old and New Testaments is in Classical Armenian. Separate New Testament title page. Text printed in two columns of modern Western Armenian type.
