Square octavo, original cream paper wrappers. $1500.Limited second edition, number 2081 of 2375 copies, with Ray's surrealistic line-cut illustrations, inscribed on the title page within Man Ray's original drawing of a hand and eyes: "For Doris & Philip, Man Ray, Paris 1956."Ray and Eluard collaborated on several books of poems, starting with Facile in 1935. First published in 1937, this is their second and more voluminous production. "The cohesion between text and [illustration]". suggests analogies with musical orchestration of theme and variation" (Hubert, 73-74). Ray's original drawing in this copy employs the hand and eye motifs common throughout. Interior fine. Spine with expert repair. An extremely good copy, inscribed and embellished.
