Miss Price's Primer. A Gift of Words - Price, Robin - 1984.
(Claremont, CA: Lavender Press, 1984. Price, Robin. Oblong octavo. (14)ff. One of fifty copies, signed by Robin Price, the printer and designer. This is Price's first book, which began as coursework for her typography class at Scripps College. This alphabet is at once a list of women's names, and an alliterative assemblage of words that also serve as character traits for these named women. Many of the words are arranged typographically to resemble the letter under consideration. Finally, there is a playful subtext that creates relationships between the characters at the end of each page. In this work, "Price delights in the possibilities of the book form, linking letter to letter forward and back in the book...the effect is to create 'a geometric rather than arithmetical progression.'" An auspicious debut from an innovative contemporary book designer. Fine in burgundy cloth with title stamped on upper cover and spine. (Bright, Betty, Breakthrough: Resoluteness. The Work of Robin Price, p. 17).
