THE WORKS OF CHARLES LAMB. In Two Volumes - LAMB. CHARLES - 1818. [1273271]
FIRST EDITION of this, the first collected edition of Lamb's works. Two volumes. Small 8vo. (6.8 x 4.2 inches). Presentation copy from the Author, with his three line inscription in ink to the front blank free endpaper of volume one; "J. J. Morgan Esq. with C Lamb's kindest respects." ----- John James Morgan (d. 1820) was a Bristol businessman and a classmate of Robert Southey. Samuel Taylor Coleridge lived with the Morgan's family in Hammersmith, London, from 1810-16. Morgan lost his fortune in later life and retired back to the West country, in Calne, Wiltshire. This edition features a five page dedication to Coleridge from Lamb. Aside from some foxing, mostly to the endpapers, this is a very good copy bound, without half titles or publishers advert leaf, in attractive late nineteenth century bindings by Morell, of half dark green crushed morocco. Spine with raised bands. Compartments lettered in gilt and ruled in blind. Marbled paper on boards. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. A lovely copy in a fine late nineteenth century leather binding with the bonus of a nice inscription from Lamb.
