Friendly correspondence with botanist August Garcke (1819-1904), including happy new year wishes, the announcement of the January issue of an unnamed monthly, and his plans to compile a geognostical repertory ("4000 slips of paper are already inscribed, and another 6000 are written. I guess there will be a bunch of 16000 articles and books, and hope to find an editor who is willing to pay 500 thaler for this trial of patience", transl. from German) - Christian Giebel was professor of zoology at Halle and director of the museum there. Giebel's chief publications were "Palaeozoologie" (1846), "Fauna der Vorwelt" (1847-1856), "Deutschlands Petrefacten" (1852), "Odontographie" (1855), "Lehrbuch der Zoologie" (1857), and "Thesaurus ornithologiae" (1872-1877).
