The Book of Fairy Poetry - GOBLE, Warwick, illustr.; J. R. R. Tolkien - 1920.
London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1920 - Quarto. Original grey cloth, titles and decoration in blue, top edge blue, illustrated endpapers. With the dust jacket bearing a colour plate illustration pasted down to front panel. Some very light rubbing and marks to cloth, internally sound and for the most part clean though with some occasional very light spotting, an excellent copy with the dust jacket chipped around the corners and bearing a few minor marks, larger creased tear to bottom of rear panel, some small tape repairs to verso. 16 colour plate illustrations by Goble, and some black and white in the text. First edition, first impression, with the very scarce jacket. This collection of fairy poetry includes Tolkien's poem "Goblin Feet", which had been Tolkien's first book appearance in Oxford Poetry 1915, and has its first illustrated iteration here. The dust jacket is very scarce, and especially prized since the publishers selected Goble's illustration to "Goblin Feet" to be replicated on the front panel (the cloth bears only some more generic fairies). Numerous other authors are represented, including Matthew Arnold, William Davenant, Walter de la Mare, Florence Harrison, Robert Herrick, James Hogg, Tom Hood, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Ben Jonson, John Keats, Andrew Lang, Fiona Macleod, Andrew Marvell, John Milton, Christina Rosetti, Walter Scott, William Shakespeare, Robert Southey, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alfred Tennyson, and W. B. Yeats. [Attributes: First Edition]
