Biblia. R. Stephanus lectori. - Bible. Latin. 1555. Vulgate - 1555. [1272417]
[Genève]: Oliva Roberti Stephani 8vo (18.5 cm; 7.25"). [12], 303, [1], 74, [2] ff.. 1555 The third Estienne octavo Latin Bible. Darlow & Moule note "this is generally considered to be => the earliest Latin Bible to exhibit R. Stephanus' division of the text into numbered verses," although it is still printed in solid double columns and was created chiefly for use with Estienne's Biblical Concordances of the same year. Its publication took place a few years after Robert I left Paris for exile in Geneva, having been driven away by the rigid theologians of the Sorbonne who took great exception to his Calvinist ideas. The text is neatly arranged in the smallest size of the Estienne types, with the colophon noting this was "excudebat Roberto Stephano Conradus Badius," Robert's brother-in-law. In this copy the title-page has been attached to another sheet of paper, covering the "exhortatio"; the sheet used to back the final leaf appears to have been a recycled letter. Provenance: Gold ink signature (yes, really) of Henry Swinarton on title page; later in the Howell Bible Collection, Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Evidence of Readership: A former owner, possibly Henry, has added a few marginal inked abbreviations on three gatherings in the Old Testament; old pencilled notes on the edition to fly-leaf. 17th-century Cambridge-style boards, expertly rebacked with gilt-stamped compartments and lettering, all edges gilt; covers refurbished. Title-page and last leaf backed as above and the former with old ink spots; two waterstained leaves and a few more with ink spots (including some where ink has bled in a little from ink to edges), one closely trimmed marginal note, three minimal marginal tears, five very small torn corners (one repaired), light age-toning (only). Lightly ex-library as above, with inked shelf mark on fly-leaf, pencilled note and call number on title-page verso, and with noted provenance/use markings. => In sum a strong and very good copy of this landmark Estienne.
