(1720-1770)."This ingenious satire against all ranks and conditions of persons, but more especially the monks, was composed by Erasmus in seven days" (Lowndes).Lowndes II: 749.Written in 1511, 'The Praise of Folly' is a "brilliant, biting satire on the folly to be found in all walks of life. His scepticism has led people to call Erasmus the father of eighteenth-century rationalism, but his rationalist attitude is that of prefect common sense, ti which tyranny and fanaticism were alike abhorrent."
