Salt [bound collection of pamphlets] - GARFIELD James - 1870.
1870 - (GARFIELD, James) HUNT, T. Sterry, et al. [Bound collection of 13 pamphlets relating to the production and taxation of salt]. Montreal, et al.: Dawson, et al., 1870-72. Thirteen pamphlets bound in one volume. Octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco rebacked to match original, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers. $2500.Interesting, annotated collection of pamphlets relating to the mining, manufacture and imposition of duties on salt, compiled and bound together for then-Congressman James A. Garfield, with his bookplate."Although in 1868 Garfield supported the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, he felt increasingly uncomfortable in the role of firebrand. His interests shifted to matters of financial policy. He advocated lower tariffs (except for items produced in his district) and was an avid crusader for hard money. He worked tenaciously for these policies on the House Ways and Means Committee and as chairman of the Appropriations Committee during the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses" (ANB). These pamphlets were all printed during this time, 1870-72, and many present positions for or against the abolition of the salt duty being considered at that time. This volume includes:1. HUNT, T. Sterry. Report on the Goderich Salt Region. Montreal: Dawson, 1870.2. Reasons Why the Salt Duty Should be Abolished. Boston: 1872.3. Annual Statement of the Business of Saginaw Valley".
