More Celtic Fairy Tales. - (JACOBS, Joseph, ed.) - 1894.
London: David Nutt,, 1894. Octavo. Finely bound by the Hampstead Bindery in contemproary green full morocco, spine titled with gilt tools and red morocco onlay, sides florally decorated in gilt with red, black and brown morocco onlay, full morocco doublures richly decorated in gilt and multicoloured onlay, japon endpapers with gilt cornerpieces, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Original wrappers bound in. Illustrated plates, vignettes and initials by John D. Batten, many hand-coloured by Gloria Cardew. Armorial bookplate of James Robson Anderson Jr to front pastdown. Spine a little darkened, joints a little rubbed, the endpapers necessarily crinkled against the japon, otherwise internally fine, excellent condition overall. First edition, number 97 of 125 copies on japon paper, signed by the publisher David Nutt, this copy exquisitely bound by the Hampstead bindery and additionally hand-coloured throughout by Gloria Cardew (with a ticket to front free endpaper verso attesting "The Illustrations in this Book were coloured by hand by Miss Gloria Cardew"). The hand coloured plates are duplicated, appearing in the uncoloured state also, suggesting some intentional collaboration between the publisher, the binder, and Miss Cardew. It is now known, however, how many copies of this already tiny edition were issued thus coloured. Cardew was associated with the Guild of Women Bookbinders, which was the sister bindery to the Hampstead Bindery, both set up by Frank Karslake. David Nutt was British publisher notable for its concentrated output of editions collecting myth, legend and fairy tale.
