Dido and Aeneas - - 1989.
(Bangor, ME: Theodore Press/Janus Press, 1989. Van Vliet, Claire. One of 150 copies signed by designer Claire Van Vliet. Produced to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Henry Purcell's Opera, this imaginative item can be read as a book with 37 printed surfaces or can be displayed as a panorama. Accordion-folded quarto-size pages of paper made by Van Vliet contain pulp-painted and shaped insert pages. Each fold of the accordion forms a stage set for one of the opera's scenes. The text follows the original printing of Nahum Tate's libretto, which was a "carelessly printed eight page pamphlet" distributed to the audience at the first performance in April, 1689. Enclosed in a cloth-covered drop-back box. In a pocket in the front of the box is a compact disc of a recording of "Dido and Aeneas." Fine.
