The Shoes of Fortune and Other Tales - Hans Christian Andersen - 1847.
Chapman & Hall, London 1847 - We offer an attractive copy of the first English edition of a collection of stories by the famous Danish children's author. The book is bound in decorative green cloth with elaborate designs in gilt on the spine and with a decoration in gilt on the front cover of a dainty pair of shoes. The volume comprising 168 pages includes eleven stories in total; there is a frontispiece and three other full-page tinted lithographs plus some quaint engravings in text. The book has been skillfully recased with the original spine laid down on well-matched new cloth. The binding is slightly sunned on the spine - the gilt titling and decoration however remains very bright, as does the gilt decoration of the shoes on the front cover. There is a neat inked dedication at the head of the half-title page dated 1850. Our copy does have an original fault on page 37, whereby the paper had been creased in the press before it was printed. As a result, a section of the last five lines of the page appear on one fold of the creased paper. When unfolded, a gap appears between the main body of the text and the lines which have been printed by mistake on the corner of the page. The full-page sepia illustrations are quite heavily fox-spotted, showing mostly on the margins and on the reverse of the paper.Even so they remain attractive. Despite detailed points noted, this still remains a particularly fresh and pleasing copy as the elaborate gilt decoration is still so bright on the binding - and the book has been repaired with exceptional skill by highly regarded British binder Maureen Duke.
