He is believed to have been educated at the University of St Andrews and worked as a notary-priest. Influenced by early church reformers such as George Wishart, he joined the movement to reform the Scottish church. In 1559 during the Scottish Reformation, the leaders of the Protestant nobility, asked Knox to write a history of the movement, and between 1559 and 1566 he produced this five-volume work, his magnum opus.
