Canton. ?????. Printed at the Office of the Chinese Repository. 1856. Frontispiece, indices, notes, xxxvi + 832pp, bound in half leather, black watered silk boards. Inscribed on title page "Monsieur Charles Dimier/from his sincere friend/Max Fischer esq/Canton 28th August 1856". Label of St. John's Cathedral Library (Hong Kong) upper pastedown, label has been crossed through in ink with a handwritten annotation suggesting deacquistion from the library which appears to be dated March 1970. Paper pocket lower pastedown, frontis chipped in a few places on the margin, a few small closed tears, lower corner one leaf repaired lower margin, some browning but generally clean, frontis torn along gutter, split between gatherings in one place. Leather worn and cracked on spine. Some erractic pagination but the text is complete. A sound complete copy of an important work. ?????? A Tonic Dictionary of the Chinese Language in the Canton Dialect was an important 19th century Cantonese to English dictionary containing 7850 characters with phonetic notation and the English definition compiled by Samuel Wells Williams (1812-1884). Wells Williams an American missionary and Sinologist of great ability became involved in America's relationship with both China and Japan beyond the sphere of usual missionary activities. He spoke Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese and spent the last years of his life as the first Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Yale University.
