London, Printed for John Morphew, 1713.Price 4d., First Edition, 8vo. in fours, (A)-D4, pp[1-2] Title and blank, pp.3-31,advert. Antique-style quarter calf over early marbled boards. Fore-edge and tail uncut, top edge closely cropped partially removing some page numbers; text is unaffected, light foxing. Teerink 587 Anthony Collin's, the celebrated Deist, published, in 1713, his 'Discourse of Freethinking, occasioned by the Rise and Growth of a Sect called Freethinkers'. Swift also mingled in the controversy, yet rather with a political than a religious view. Swift, in making this ironical defence of Collin's, assumed the character of a Whig, as if to identify the deistical opinions of that author with those of the opponents of the Tory Ministry.
