British Castles; or, A Compendious History - Fielding, T.H - 1825.
Howlett and Brimmer, London 1825 - Oblong 4to, 21 by 27 cm. vi, 72, pp. 25 hand-colored aquatint plates, including frontis, of ultra-Romantic castles, many of which were by then ruins, all of which were set in bucolic surroundings, whether by the windswept sea, a hillock, a meadow, etc. The work bespeaks the new-found fascination with the British architectural past and the incipient historicism, as perhaps captured well in the frontis comparison of arches from different periods. Contemporary half red-morocco, with title label on front board. Light to moderate foxing on text leaves and tissue guards. Plates are clean. Overall, a bright, lovely copy of a comparatively uncommon color plate book of that era. [Attributes: First Edition]
