- London - B. T. Batsford 1896 - A first edition of Eleanor Rowe'sFrench Wood Carvings, complete in three volumes. With ties and generally in much better condition than usualy seen. With 54 black and white plates, showing many fabulous examples of wood-carving from across the ages covered. Volume one coversthe late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, with mainly late fifteenth century Gothic examples. The second series covers sixteenth century work, from Francis I to the death of Charles IX. The third series comprises of carvings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The plates are described with helpful annotations, aiding their appreciation. This is an ex library copy, but lacks the usual additions. With library plates to the front pastedowns only. Collated: complete, with plate XVII duplicated. Condition: Unboundwithinclothcovers with paper covered boards. Externally slightly worn, with wear to the extremities and some marking to the boards. The heads and tails of the spines are a little bumped. The rear tie of volume three is foreshortened. With a library plate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally, pages are generally clean, with a little age toning. The edges are occasionally a little worn due to the fact that the leaves are unbound as called for. Involumes two and threethe half title page is somewhat foxed. In volume one the front blank is foxed, and the library plate has offset a little.
